Tesla's Big Day or Big Flop

2016-04-05 17:50:05
Tesla will begin taking reservations for the new Model 3 later today. Here is how to do it if you are interested. The promises associated with the car are pretty bold, including a 200 mile range, comfortable seating for five, and a price tag ~$35,000 for the newest all-electric technology.

The unveiling of this vehicle is reminiscent of days gone by in some ways. There was a time when new models were shipped to dealers who kept them under cover until the specified date when they were revealed to the public. The unveiling of the new Buick's was always a highlight of Grandpa's year in the Mayberry-esque town where he spent his life. It truly was an event, with news reporters on hand to document the exciting new features and colors available for those fortunate enough to trade up.

Can Tesla recreate that kind of magic with the reveal of an affordable new model in a segment previously dominated by the entry level euro crowd? Is there some allure to this car or this approach that will make people dish out a deposit a year and a half before any hope of seeing the product?  Bloomberg offers up some interesting points "we think we know" in their article about the Model 3 but the secrecy around factual details has been carefully guarded.

It will be interesting on April Fools Day to see if Elon Musks latest project is the envy of the automotive world or if his magic faltered when the cover is pulled away. This model has the opportunity to hit or miss in a big way.
